A safe summer for children? It starts at the pool.

Having your own swimming pool is a huge benefit. But it also comes with responsibility. Every year lifeguards warns of the risks posed by home swimming pools. Why? Up to 70% of drownings involving young children happen in them.
A safe summer for children? It starts at the pool.

Protect your child from accidentally falling into the pool, where they could get hurt or worse. How can you prevent this risk and reduce it to a minimum? The answer to this question is to properly secure your pool.

An open pool, an open risk

Rescue workers who have been called to the scene of a domestic tragedy warn that private pools often lack basic safety measures such as child locks, barriers, or visual supervision. Yet many accidents can be prevented with these measures.

An open pool with freely accessible water is often an irresistible temptation for children and also poses the greatest risk. They may misjudge the situation, slip while playing on the wet edge, and even if they know how to swim, fear or injury may prevent them from handling the situation. This is where a solution comes in that is safe, practical in many ways, and can even look good.

Pool cover, an investment in safety

We can make a whole list of situations that begin with the words “But what if...” What if a child opens the pool, what if we forget to close it, what if... On the one hand, they may all be true, but on the other hand, the solution itself involves at least a physical obstacle and the need to overcome it. When used correctly, this physical barrier can mean the difference between life and tragedy. And it is nothing more than a simple pool cover.

Investing in a pool enclosure is an investment in safety, comfort, and well-being. The enclosure acts as a barrier against unwanted entry or falling into the water, protects children, pets and seniors, and offers many other practical benefits, including extending the swimming season, reducing pool contamination and lowering water heating costs.

3 Types of pool enclosures

When choosing a pool enclosure, there are several options that vary in design, height, opening method, construction and price. Here is an overview of the main types:

1. By enclosure height

Low enclosures are usually less than one meter high. Their main advantage is their inconspicuous appearance – they blend almost imperceptibly into the garden. Thanks to the “greenhouse effect,” they can effectively heat the water while protecting it from dirt. However, the disadvantage is that you cannot swim properly under a closed cover.

Medium-height covers (approx. 1–1.5 m) are a compromise between design and comfort. They allow movement around the pool even in inclement weather and extend the swimming season. They are the ideal solution for families who do not want a completely enclosed pavilion but are looking for comfort.

High enclosures, often referred to as pool pavilions, are 1.8 meters high or more. Under such a cover, you can move around comfortably even when the structure is closed, allowing you to use the pool all year round. Such a roof can also serve as a relaxation area that protects against wind and rain. The disadvantage is the higher price and more significant visual impact on the garden space.

2. According to the construction and opening method

There are several solutions in terms of construction and opening. The most commonly used are sliding covers, which consist of several panels that slide under each other, usually on rails. This system allows for easy uncovering of the entire water surface. A more aesthetic alternative is a trackless pool cover, which maintains the clean look of the pool surroundings but tends to be slightly more expensive. Fixed (static) covers do not open – they serve as a permanent cover, more suitable for long-term protection outside the season. Special and elegant solutions include retractable structures that slide into the wall or sliding systems for pools near the house or pergola.

3. According to the material used

As for the materials used, the most common is aluminum, which is lightweight, strong, and weather-resistant. The panels are usually made of polycarbonate, which has excellent insulating properties, protects against UV radiation and is safe. Glass is also used in exceptional cases, which looks luxurious but is heavier and more expensive.

Aluminum construction

When it comes to the quality of pool enclosure construction, aluminum is clearly the dominant material. Aluminum construction is among the highest quality, mainly due to its exceptional practicality and long service life.

Aluminum is practically indestructible and highly resistant to weathering – it does not corrode even in environments with high humidity or in contact with pool chemicals. Its natural resistance to oxidation is often further enhanced by anodizing or powder coating, which improves not only its appearance but also its durability.

It is light and strong, with a low weight that makes the structure easier to handle, whether for assembly or everyday use of the cover. At the same time, it retains its excellent strength, so even larger and more robust covers remain stable and safe. An aesthetic advantage is the possibility to choose the color. Aluminum profiles can be surface-treated to match your home, terrace, and inflatable pool.

Thanks to these properties, aluminum pool covers are considered ideal for long-lasting and reliable pool covers with a very long service life, often exceeding 20 years.

Local manufacturer with global reviews

Covering your home pool is the highest level of protection against the risk of drowning, as recommended by Slovak aluminum pool enclosure manufacturer MontAlu. They work with premium quality, highly durable materials, with an emphasis on high safety standards and modern enclosure design.

Pool covers in various designs are supplied with additional safety features such as child locks and automatic segment locking. Each enclosure is made to measure and comes with professional installation. In addition, the track is safe for children as it can be walked on barefoot.

A summer full of laughter

Summer is in full swing, but recent years have shown that the outdoor swimming season is far from over when the holidays end. Not to mention that danger knows no season. You can slip just as easily in spring as in summer or autumn, before the pool is winterized.

The good news is that there is a way to minimize the risk of accidents and tragedies, and it's in your hands. Choose a pool enclosure that is, first and foremost, safe and fits in with your home, and enjoy a summer full of laughter with your family.
